The drama program’s recent performance is titled Play On!, and it is about a small theatre group attempting to put on a play called A Murder So Foul. The cast faces many struggles, including an interfering playwright, tension between actors, and technical issues. Their comical endeavors are the focus of this hilarious show.

The play itself was highly entertaining. This comedy utilized both slapstick humour and witty one-liners to leave the audience laughing out loud. Melanie Tanaka played Geraldine “Gerry” Dunbar, the director of the play. The show opens with her rushing down the aisle of the theater to critique the actors on stage, which is an interesting start and lets the audience know of the meta nature of the performance. Anna Baker takes the role of Phyllis Montague, the eccentric playwright who tries to constantly make changes to the show days before its opening. Another key component is the banter between Connor Franzen and Micaela Erickson’s characters, who play Saul Watson and Polly Benish, respectively. The character of Saul constantly makes remarks about Polly’s weight, which leads to angry responses from her, and the amusing back-and-forth continues throughout the show.

The cast is what elevates the show; it looked fun to perform, which made the show enjoyable. Alexiss Lloyd said that “Play On! was such a fun experience” and that “the cast and crew were such amazing people and [they] all got along really well.” She also noted that “it was really cool to see how it all came together in the end and to see how everyone reacted to it. The set and all the lighting and sound aspects were so phenomenal and everyone put in a lot of hard work.” It was clearly a great show to be part of, as much as it was a great show to watch.
