The 2018 MLB season is coming to an end and the postseason is just around the corner. The wildcard matchups begin this October. During the season, teams fight for a postseason seed in the standings. The two lowest postseason seeds are called the wildcard. The two teams that are in the two wildcard positions in that league compete in a one game matchup, determining who moves on to face the division winner.

The first matchup is a good one. The New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics have been fighting to win their division for months now. The Yankees, 87-52, have been trailing the Boston Red Sox all season. They are currently in the first wildcard in the American League. The Athletics, 83-57, recently have been giving the Houston Astros a scare. The last month, they’ve been on the Astros tail as they are currently 3.5 games back from them. If the Yankees and Athletics continue to trail the Red Sox and Astros, they will face off in the AL wildcard by the end of this month.

The next matchup is from the National League. The Milwaukee Brewers and the St. Louis Cardinals are the two teams that are currently in the NL wildcard. The Brewers, 79-61, currently trail the Chicago Cubs in their division. The Cubs have led the NL Central all season and are projected to finish first. The Brewers are three games back from the Cubs. The Cardinals, 77-62, just got off one of the hottest months in MLB history. In the month of August, the Cardinals had a record of 22-6. Before August, they were out of a postseason spot. That record put them ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Brewers and Cardinals both play in the NL Central as they are fighting for the division title. If both remain behind the Cubs, they will face off in the NL wildcard by the end of this month.

Those are the most likely matchups that we are going to witness in early October. There is still a month left for teams to climb and fall in the standings.
