We all have our favorite artists, and for the most part, teens usually pick popular rap and pop stars. However, while music taste is an immensely subjective topic, it’s rather undeniable that popular music nowadays is not all that deserving of it’s fame.

Over the past few decades, music has become increasingly sterilized and repetitive. A good majority of the songs on the radio sound very similar, and almost all of it is either rap or hip-hop, exempting certain stations that play country or other types of music. But the general consensus for the mainstream media stands: rap, pop, and R&B.

While there are certainly examples of popular rap and pop artists that actually are deserving of the title “artist”, too many musicians simply copy one another’s themes and music styles. There is very little variation in modern mainstream music, as it’s all rap or pop; it always talks about things that most people shy away from. Not only does this environment stifle creativity and originality, it takes away from the artistry and poetry of music. Lyrics are usually straightforward and bland as they describe an unhealthy, unsavory lifestyle.

However, not everything about modern music is terrible. There are plenty of bands and artists out there who put effort, creativity, and passion into their work, even if they are rather cast out of the spotlight by their more popular peers. It is just unfortunate that there are not more genres of music playing on mainstream radio stations alongside rap and pop, with meaningful lyrics and creative styles.
