Nikki Calub got her first pair of ballet shoes at the age of eight. Ever since then, she has been working hard at keeping her legs straight, shoulders down, and feet pointed. Years of determination and hard work finally paid off when she became this year captain of the Los Alamitos Dance Team. As a member of The Griffin Chronicles, I was able to interview Nikki about her leadership role, motivation, and what to expect from the team this upcoming year.

How would you keep yourself motivated during the season?

“I remind myself that my time in the dance program won’t last forever so I have to take advantage of it now. As captain, I feel the need to keep my fellow teammates motivated as well.”

What is one thing you can add to the program?

“I believe I can lead the team to do great things. I feel the most important thing for me is being a team; creating deeper bonds with other dancers is my top priority. I plan on organizing more get-togethers for us to get closer.”

What characteristics do you feel are most important for dancers to possess?

“The characteristics most important for dancers to possess are hardworking, encouraging, and able to apply corrections. A dancer should be able to correct themselves to become better. Also, dancers should be encouraging because it is important to have a strong support system. Being hardworking is detrimental for shows and competitions because you are motivated to show your best on stage.”

Nikki is excited and ready to lead her team in a series of incredible shows and victorious dance competitions.
