Volunteering

Benefits of volunteering as a high-school student.

Los Alamitos is one of the many high schools filled with rigorous courses and abundant work loads, which can lead ambitious students into a state of stress and sleep deprivation.

Having an extra cord at graduation may not seem like a big deal, but for a college-bound student, it is an invaluable advantage.

Extra cords signify the hours of volunteer work a student puts in outside of their academic career. Although it is hard to manage such a schedule on top of the grueling hours dedicated to homework and extracurriculars, finding time to go the extra mile is extremely beneficial. Colleges have a higher demand for students that volunteer.

Sometimes, though, it is hard to get involved in extracurricular programs that offer volunteering. Here at Los Alamitos High, beautification is always an option for a student searching for extra hours, as well as clubs that dedicate themselves to bettering their local community. Some students even find ways to volunteer at local pet shelters in order to gain insights about colleges’ desires through their after-school work.

Yes, it is true that many of us are striving for the cord at graduation, and the wish to be targeted by our top-choice schools. However, with volunteering also comes experience and the chance to better ourselves as humans. Hours cleaning up our campus, working with animals, or volunteering at a local thrift shop, as I do, all give us the chance to grow as people and better our understanding of life and how our community functions. Through some volunteering programs, leadership skills are acquired, which serve us well in the business-world as well as in our own lives.

Working at the thrift-store has taught me how to interact with customers, work a cash register, tally savings at the end of the day, keep an establishment clean, and how to market a business.

Volunteering not only makes one’s resume more desirable to colleges, but it also helps us grow as people.

Give it a chance, it may surprise you!
