While social distancing helps lower the curve, it doesn’t help cure your boredom. As Netflix and Hulu get repetitive, you may want to try new things. Here are some things you can do to keep yourself entertained and are beneficial for your brain. One thing to do to keep yourself entertained is cooking. Research finds that people who eat home-cooked meals on a regular basis tend to be happier and healthier. By cooking at home you consume less sugar and processed foods, which results in high levels of energy and improves mental health. Another very beneficial thing to do is learn a new language. There are many free apps, like duolingo, that allow people to learn any language at any level. Being bilingual has a multitude of benefits when it comes to the size of your brain. Learning a new language increases the size of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Your brain gets bigger with exercise and practice, just like any other muscle. Learning, speaking, and reading in other languages keeps your mind active and healthy. Learning a new artistic skill such as embroidery, painting, knitting, or sketching is also beneficial. Studies have shown that expressing yourself and your thoughts through art can help with depression and anxiety. Making art is also shown to improve memory, reasoning, and resilience. The beneficial effects of making art is not determined on a person’s skill level or talents. Although it may not seem like it, you have many things to explore inside your home. Staying inside helps lower the curve and helps your brain!
