A new Netflix original series, 13 Reasons Why, based on the novel by Jay Asher, tells the story of a girl named Hannah Baker who commits suicide and leaves thirteen audio tapes to the people that led her to doing so. On these tapes she recalls certain events that caused her an unbearable amount of pain. So what makes this show stand out from other typical teen dramas? Well, what makes this show so original and outstanding is the fact it deals with “taboo” topics such as sexual abuse/assault, bullying, depression, sexuality, and mental illness. A lot of shows tend to look over issues such as these that affect so many teenagers and becoming more aware of these problems are essential. It is one of those shows that makes you think and try to better yourself after watching – for example, seeing how badly Hannah is treated by her peers may cause you to start thinking before you speak, which you should do regardless but unfortunately it is still an issue.. especially in high school. 85% of the people I talked to had heard of the show, and most had started watching — spreading awareness of shows such as this is extremely crucial into moving forward in society.
